Desert Elephants in Damaraland

"I have seen many other Namibian Safari itineraries (and traveled with two), offered by well-known, up-market tour providers, and I think yours is outstanding in the many varied experiences it offers."

Harriette F.

Epupa Falls

"At times, there were more opportunities to photograph animals than I could absorb. The excitement of suddenly spotting a single unsuspecting animal or watching various herds adjust to our presence and then go on about their lives exceeded my expectations.  At many times, I felt like an active participant in their experience rather than a passive spectator at a distance."

John H.

"Blue" Bull Eland, the largest wild  antelope, in eastern Etosha Park

"For total enjoyment, Okonjima /AfriCats was the top.   The range of (environments for) cats was fascinating. Getting within 10-15 yards of a wild cat (who kills for food) was the absolute highlight!!"

Hugo Y.

This Fly-In Safari Runs for 7 Days in Namibia, with 2 Preliminary Days for International Air Travel.

Day 1.  Friday:  Depart on your African eco-safari adventure. Travel from the US to Namibia requires an overnight flight and then an overnight stay in South Africa before connecting to your morning flight to Namibia.

Day 2.  Saturday: Arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa, and rejuvenate yourself overnight at the International Airport Holiday Inn Hotel.  The Holiday Inn is on the airport grounds, a 3-minute courtesy van ride away from the terminal.  The hotel stay with dinner at the Holiday Inn and breakfast the next morning are included in the safari price.

Day 3. Sunday: After spending a relaxing evening in Johannesburg, board an early morning flight to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, where you will be met by your tour guide and pilot.  Fly from Windhoek to your first adventurous destination, Damaraland Camp. This resort recently won second prize in the British Travel Writers Silver Otter awards for the best eco-tourism project in the world, and were designated the best in Africa.

Damaraland Camp attempts to integrate the community, environment, and wildlife on a sustainable basis.  Wildlife in the area includes desert-adapted elephants, black rhinos, and oryx (gemsbok), while lion and cheetah may visit the area.  This camp offers 4x4 game drives and guided game walks in one of the most rugged wilderness areas in Namibia.

Day 4.
Monday:  Be among the few visitors who can view spectacular, remote Epupa Falls, one of Africa’s most scenic waterfalls.  Epupa Falls was created by tectonic fractures in the desert plateau, and is the second largest in Southern Africa after Victoria Falls. But very few people have the chance to see Epupa Falls, unlike the crowds at Vic Falls.  End the day at Epupa Camp on the Kunene River with beautiful views of the river and desert.  Epupa Camp is a resort that offers permanent East-African style tents with en suite facilities.

Day 5.   Tuesday: Visit Himba tribal encampments in the Epupa Falls area and enjoy cultural interactions with the tribes people using a local interpreter supplied by Epupa Camp. We encourage you to buy unique Himba handicrafts if you find them interesting. These exchanges will help the Himba improve their economic welfare without sacrificing their traditional way of life.

Then you fly southeast over the rugged Koakoland desert wilderness to the Kavita Lion Lodge, a private game reserve that is also the home of the Afri-Leo Foundation of Namibia, our conservation partner.

Day 6.   Wednesday:  You fly east over game-filled Etosha  Park to the luxurious Ongava Camp, located just below the entrance to the government-run Okaukuejo Camp in central Etosha.  Ongava Camp is operated by the Wilderness Safaris Company and combines a rustic thatched appearance with every modern convenience.  The facilities, staff, and cuisine at Ongava Camp are all outstanding.

Many of the best wildlife photos in our Namibian PHOTO GALLERY were taken on game drives in the central region of Etosha Park.

Day 7.   Thursday:  After a morning game drive in Etosha, you will fly over the wildlife to the eastern boundary of Etosha Park and will stay at the small but comfortable Mushara Lodge.  The Mushara staff will take you for afternoon and next morning game drives in the eastern areas of Etosha Park, which have perhaps the highest density of animals in Namibia.  You have a chance to see all of the major predator species, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas, as well as elephants, zebras, giraffes, and many diverse antelope species.

Day 8.   Friday:  After the morning game drive, you'll leave Etosha Park and fly south to Okonjima, an exceptional luxury resort and predator rehabilitation center.  Okonjima also serves as a sanctuary for cheetahs and lions that cannot safely be returned to the wild, and the resort is the home base for the AfriCat Foundation of Namibia.  Close-up sightings of resident cheetahs and lions will provide you with excellent wildlife photo opportunities, and there's also a good chance to see leopards  You will overnight in luxurious Okonjima cabanas.

Day 9.  Saturday:  After the morning activities at Okonjima, including game drives or walks in their cheetah enclosure, you will be driven to the Windhoek airport to catch your return flights to South Africa and then your next destination.  On the way to the airport, you will be able to shop for Namibian jewelry, gemstones, and handicrafts at great prices.

The flight routing is flexible and clients may choose to travel via Cape Town on their way to Windhoek, or they may choose to spend the first Saturday night in Windhoek rather than Johannesburg. The fly-in safari begins on Sunday.
